Music Monday: Holiday Tuneage

‘Tis the season to already be annoyed with holiday music before Christmas has even had a chance to get here.  I love holiday music but I tend to prefer to have it as a soundtrack for holiday activities (present shopping, decorating, baking, or trying on Christmas party outfits) rather than a 24/7 stream from Thanksgiving day on.  Luckily, as I am only two days away from being on a plane headed home for Christmas, I feel festive enough to listen with reckless abandon.

Everyone has their holiday favorites and The Waitress’ Christmas Wrapping is mine.  I love that it has a great narrative and a danceable beat and manages to not get old, even during daily listening sessions.

So, deck those halls and trim those trees and raise a cup of Christmas cheer and get ready to rock!

Music Monday: Gotta Have My Blogs

I know, I know.  I am caught in this vicious cycle of being unemployed, blogging a lot, getting a job, and then never posting.  I’m going to truly buckle down in the next few weeks and rededicate myself this to blog.

Until then, I’m using this week’s Music Monday to point you towards a music blog that I adore and their very awesome Back to Work Mix.  It has some great tunes from Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, The Drive-By Truckers, Belle & Sebastian, and more.  Definitely worth a listen!  Also, this mix comes with a cartoon:

Music Monday: Dolly Parton

I have an unabashed love for Dolly Parton.  Maybe it’s because I’m from Texas, where you learn to have a healthy respect for buxom big-haired women, or maybe it’s from watching Steel Magnolias at least one hundred times (I don’t trust anyone who does their own hair. I don’t think it’s natural.)

Regardless of the reason, I love Dolly – love her music, love her movies, love to drunkenly belt out Jolene at karaoke, love every darn thing about her.  So it feels apropos, on the first day of my new job [details to come tomorrow!] to let my girl Dolly get me in the mood for heading back to work.

Nine to Five – Dolly Parton

[Also, this may be one of the strangest videos I’ve seen for awhile.  Do Minnie Mouse and the princesses have some sort of labor dispute?  Is this some sort of trenchant social commentary on Walt Disney?  Why is Dolly the only person in the world who can pull off so much fringe?  I digress.]

This is a song, that for all its cheesy and slick production, never fails to get me a little excited about working.  It sends me back to my youth, when I thought going to work was going to be like the film Nine to Five or Working Girl – I’d get to wear loud suits and struggle with oppressive male bosses and persevere on pluck and hairspray.  The great thing about Dolly is you always believe what she’s singing – her sincerity isn’t manufactured.

So, although I’m a little nervous for my first day, you can be sure that while I’m doing the crossword on the Metro, I’ll have Dolly piping through my headphones.

Music Monday: Free Energy

It’s the start of a new week and for me, the start of yet another job search and another new chapter.  While I find myself more optimistic than I imagined I would be (thanks to good friends, great family, and the occasional PBR), it never hurts to have a little psych up music to get you going!

C’mon Let’s Dance by Free Energy

Free Energy
has been one of my favorite bands of 2010, populating many a playlist throughout the summer.  I particularly love this track because it has a retro vibe in the chorus that’s perfect for singing along but it’s also beach-y mellow enough that you can rock out to it while still crafting the perfect cover letter.

Friday Frivolity

Hello readers!

I know I have not been as diligent about posting, with my recent foray into temporary employment.  However, I am offically back starting on Monday!  So, please check back for a full week of posts next week and of course, keep sending your emails, tweets, stories, and more – I love reading them and love sharing them!

Since it’s the Friday of what has been a fairly rough week for me, I’ll leave you with something that has really made me feel better this week.   It’s one of my favorite singers, Janelle Monae, with a beautiful cover of Charlie Chaplin’s Smile.

Have a great weekend!
